This song is often spoken about as the anthem of Hungarian gypsies. Although, as I know, this is regarded an anthem of only one ethnic group of gypsies in Hungary, the Beás. (There are 6 different groups of gypsies in Hungary.) Anyway, this is a great song! Though it has folk origin, it is not a folk song. Hungarian wikipedia says the lyrics was written resting on a gypsy tale which was recorded by Károly Bari. As for the cyclopaedia, the Hungarian lyrics is attributable to Gustráv Varga, and the Beás language one to Jakab Órsós.
There are a lot of nice performances, here is one, where the label says it is in the original language. (But what does it count the original language?)
It is difficult to give a precise number of gypsies living in Hungary. They estimate 600 000-800 000 people, which is the 6-8% of Hungarian population.
Zöld az erdő, zöld a hegy is
A szerencse jön is, megy is
Gondok kése húsunkba vág
Képmutató lett a világ
The wood is green, the hill is also green
Fortune comes and goes
The knife of worry cuts into our flash
The world became hypocrite
Egész világ ellenségünk
Űzött tolvajokként élünk
Nem loptunk mi csak egy szöget
Krisztus vérző tenyeréből
The whole world is our enemy
We live like ridden thieves
We haven't stolen anything but a single nail
From the bleeding palm of Christ
Isten, könyörülj meg nékünk
Ne szenvedjen tovább népünk
Megátkoztál, meg is vertél
Örök csavargóvá tettél
An other version for the last two lines:
Megáldottál, megváltottál
Országodba befogadtál
God, have mercy on us
Let our people not to suffer any more
You cursed us, you struck us
You made us outcast forever
An other version for the last two lines:
You blessed us, you redeemed us
You housed us into your country
The lyrics in Beás, according to wikipedia:
"Pădure vergyé, pădure vergyé,
Nuroku vinyé, nuroku merzsjé,
Gîndu bátyé bubujestyé,
Lume, cárá misjunyestyé.
Lume, cárá-j sztrăjinu nosztru,
Kă-j băjásu numá lotru,
N-ány furát noj numá on kuj,
Dîn krusje lu Dimizo.
Jártă, jártă Dimizolyé,
Hă nyé jertyé lume, cárá,
Ny-áj bătut tu kum áj gîngyit,
Lume, cárá ny-o însztrănyit."
